Do you have an art-related 4 year college degree? My understanding is that you should get one of those, and a kick-ass portfolio. Once you've got the skills to make things as high-quality as the models you see in games, and you have a portfolio to prove it, it's just a matter of networking and applying for jobs.

The UI work is fairly specialized. We have a User Experience designer who does UI design along with some other things, and we have a dedicated UI artist. I say I probably wouldn’t make a very good UI designer simply because UI design just isn’t really what I’m interested in.
