Origins Of A Geek

The folks from the PlayStation Blog recently sat down with Ken Levine, but this time, they didn’t go into the nitty gritty of BioShock Infinite. Rather, the conversation focused on something that’s near and dear to all of our hearts: Growing up as a geek.

As you may already know, Levine embraces all facets of nerd-dom, but in this interview, you’ll find out a bit more about why he loves geek culture, and why there’s no shame in that. If you’ve ever wondered a bit about Ken’s youth, how he got into writing, or if you’d simply like to know about some of the influences found in BioShock Infinite, this article may be well worth your time.

It’s true we became increasingly acknowledged as movies, comics, videogames took a significant part in our pop-cultural landscape. Even if being a geek nowadays is kinda trendy, almost losing its significance, and being more common than back in the days, I’m still happy we reached this level of acceptance.

It was cool to hear his parents supported his “geekiness” when he was small. I was fortunate to be in the same situation growing up and will do the same for my son (if he chooses to be a geek like his Dad :). Also enjoy following what Ken is reading (has read) to add to my own list: Ghost Map (check), Animal Farm (check)

Some of Ken’s best interviews are just on his perspective and experiences and can have nothing to do on what he is working on at the moment! Not that we don’t want to hear more about Infinite though ;).

Haha, my family is the reason why I’m a geek. My dad has always been a big Elder Scrolls fan. And he was the one who got me gaming as a little kid. Castle of the Winds (awesome roguelike, google search for it. it’s available for free now), Thief, and System Shock 2…these were my first games :)

Between my piano lessons and Electronic Gaming Monthly subscription as a child, I was the only geek in my family. In a way, I still am! I’m a big fan of hearing about where Ken’s been in the past. It’s always fun to hear about. I love it.

Always interesting to see how other creative people think and look at life. So many different approaches and to see what path has led them to the here and now.
