Irrational’s PAX Panel and Voice Actor Q&A

PAX Prime 2011 saw the first public appearance on behalf of BioShock Infinite by the game’s two lead voice actors, Troy Baker (Booker DeWitt) and Courtnee Draper (Elizabeth). They participated in our panel to discuss the process of bringing video game characters to life, alongside Irrational creative director Ken Levine. For those unable to make it to the show, our friends at G4 helpfully recorded the whole thing! Its a good solid 45 minutes of insight and behind-the-scenes video, so head over to G4’s site and make with the watching already.

But as much as we enjoyed putting the panel together, we can’t overlook a pretty major flaw: There just wasn’t enough time for the planned question-and-answer session.

We want to make things right, and what better place to do that than on the internet, where none shall be denied answers due to lack of PAX badge ownership. Send your questions for Ken, Troy, or Courtnee to voiceactorqa@irrationalgames.com. Get them in by Wednesday, September 7, and we’ll address them in an upcoming feature here on the site.

And hey, if you were one of the privileged PAX attendees and you made it to the panel, share your feedback in the comments below!

This was definitely my favorite panel at PAX! It was really interesting to hear about the collaborative writing process between Ken, Courtney, & Troy. It was too bad that it was cut short, but thanks for the opportunity for post-Q&A. :)

Also, thanks to Ken, Courtney, & Troy for being available to meet at the booth soon after. That was a great blessing!

This video definitely gave me a greater appreciation for the time, effort, and subtle behind the scenes nuances that go into crafting what we as gamers oftentimes might take for granted. I wasn’t a big fan upon hearing that the voice actor for Booker had changed as I rather enjoyed the voice from the 2010 demo. I, now couldn’t be happier with the choice that was made to bring on Troy for the voice of Booker. One would think that as a rabid Irrational ,”Cultist” , that I would by now recognize the futility in questioning their decision making process. I might learn one day, but until then keep making me look foolish Irrational!

This was one of my very few “MUST-SEE” panels at PAX. And since Q&A often devolves into “Can I hug you?” and “It’s my birthday,” I didn’t mind that things ran long. ;-)

I enjoyed the insight the panel provided. Voice acting has been an interest of mine for decades, and I’ve attended dozens of panels on the subject (most dealing with anime). The discussion of the collaborative nature of the process was fairly unique, as was the video of Ken and Troy helping Courtnee reach the proper emotional state for the horse scene.

Great panel to watch – Ken, Troy, and Courtnee were great and informative on the process which went into doing the voice work for Bioshock Infinite. Looking forward to hearing more about it!

Awesome! I really liked how Troy made Courtnee get some emotions for a dialog line.

I don’t know if I’ll send any questions, I can’t honestly think of anything.

So very awesome. Really cool insight on the process of capturing the vocal performances of these two fine actors. This game is going to play on the emotions of the gamer to a level that is so rare in first person shooters.

Watching the video of Ken and Troy pushing Courtnee to conjure up that kind of emotion is so fascinating. Courtnee is a trooper for pushing through like that. DAMN this is some great work.
