I'm being repetitive, but these podcasts are like pillows. By the time you're sick of one side you flip it over and bam, damn you're in heaven again. If that makes any sense |

1) me too, like Shawn, worked in a grocery store in my early years, when I started working for a living - I know that work. I used to work sometimes from 6:00 am to 9:00 pm, being paid only the usual 8 hours, for a job that eats you alive. Working in retail is like living in Zombieland? - you heard it here first, kids. Remember the scene in Michael Mann's HEAT, when Robert DeNiro asks the Burger flipping on-parole Duder (Dennis Haysbert), to join his crew for the bank robbery? A life defining moment. I had that too, many times, like ... 5) the telemarketing/bus experience . I made one call and that was it for me also (having to sell magazine subscriptions to lonely old ladies, who are the only ones picking up the phone at early afternoons, grateful that somebody would speak to them - poor bastards who have to do this kind of job to support their families I'd say: "learn your math first, kids, don't be a douche in life and you might make it" (that's my Coco speech). |

Mark Hill 66, the CTI2 was me. I graduated from DLI back in 1987, though, so it's been over 20 years since I called Monterey home. When were you there? |

I worked in grocery for about three years. We had recycling machines for people to recycle (duh) and get a print-out for how much money the store owed them. There was a complaint about the smell one time, so, since I was the one working the shift that required the changing of the recycling containers, I ran over and opened the machine. Someone had pinched a loaf into one of the soda cans, then ran it through the machine. It smelled terrible, and I nearly threw-up, but I always wondered if it was a disgruntled, former employee, or just a jerk customer. Great show, guys! |

I totally agree. I was actually just listening to one of their old GFW podcasts the other day while playing tetris on the NES and was laughing so hard at the "if a customer asks us to help them find a product we have to physically take them to the isle and then touch the product". Good stuff. Downloading the new episode now. |

Loved this podcast! Who can't relate to the bluesy woes of working an uninspiring job? I really enjoyed the anecdotal format of this episode - really fun stuff. I love how the stories touched on the real ways that people successfully go from A to B. It can be a tricky kind of uneventful, working those grind shifts; but, in my experience, the best mindset to have is looking at the world in terms of the practical versus the chancy, figuring out your place in the world with regard to how much energy you afford it and how open you are for the opportunities that do come your way. All the while, continue doing what you love to do and you should be golden. Andrew Marathas |
