X-com?

So the rumor is burning that IG is working on an X-Com title. Fellow community members not familiar, X-Com was a turn-based tactical squad combat game (something like that). You led a squad through missions against an alien thread. If a squad member died, you lost all his experience and training and had to bring forth someone else (from a limited pool of candidates). You could run out of candidates! Additionally, you had to push forward on research to deal with the increasingly overt alien thread.

I cannot do the series justice. There were many levels to it, from the missions, to the overall world-level interactions.

There were some 'sequels' made by some non-US developers, but they generally missed the mark in some way or another and never advanced the experience beyond the originals.

Any thoughts on where IG might take the franchise if it were true (I hope, i hope, i hope). Maybe our friendly neighborhood community manager would like to comment?

I loved X-Com, it was one of the first PC games I had that really got under my skin and I had to keep playing. I have Irrational are working on a new version.

YES, I was hoping someone had already asked.

As you can tell from my avatar, I'm an X-COM nut.

Please Irrational, just say it, are you doing any kind of X-COM project, like a squad based shooter similar to SWAT4, which fits in Irrational's style, or even a top down turn based squad game which would be awesome?

I really hope they are doing it since I have many fond memories of playing X-com like a mad man.
Rethinking the franchise irrational style might just make it great!
Im sure that the current version of the games and the viewpoints are outdated and needs to be redesigned.

We don't comment on rumors and speculation, and all that corporate standard stuff.

However, let me just say that I love Xcom. Blaster Launchers FTW.

Since people got your attention, I suppose it\'s OK for you to discuss the existing games. So anything you\'d like to share? Things you liked and things you didn\'t. It\'s always interesting to hear from a developer\'s perspective. That is if you have time, of course.

To kick off: which alien do you find the most memorable? For me, it\'s the Lobster man hands down. I hate them as much as I love them. I remember back when I was new to TFTD and I met them the first time. Let me tell you, that mission didn\'t go well (in Beginner no less). It didn\'t help that I was armed with Gauss rifles. I think I emptied a full clip at point blank range at one and I don\'t think I hurt him at all. Recently I started a new game on Superhuman and got reminded why I hated them so much. It took 3 shots with the Sonic Cannon to bring one down. And there\'s the stupid Bio-Drones that come with them on Terror Sites. I never know which direction they\'re facing.

Eh, this reminds me I have to find out who\'s in charge of X-Com in 2K Games management now. My previous contact (also a fan) left for Bethesda. There was some stuff related to X-Com that is now in limbo.

On a related note, what happens to 2K Australia?

Oh, by the way, would it be possible to change the color of the text in the text box? The contrast isn\'t all that great so it\'s a bit hard to read.

Edit: Forgot to say this - great site and I love what you did with the forum. Two thumbs up.

Ken, I figured as much. Thanks for at least giving a nod to us all. BTW, sorry for the fan goofiness, but I just love almost every title you've been involved in.
