Video game testin, irrational?

I was wondering how you guys do testing?

Is it with random people? Do you require college?

Basically i see sites all over sayin to pay 30 for a subscription to be on a list of potential testers.. or somthing no idea how that works, not gonna pay to get hired... doesnt seem logical.

I know theres this thread http://irrationalgames.com/community/forums/ask-irrational/question-about-getting-into-the-gaming-industry/

But it doesnt really answer my question, im looking into more of the testing field, not actually being part of the creation/art team.

So, to sum it up where do yours come from? how much do they start off making, and how often do you hire more?
